How to Avoid Doing What You Hate to Do

ask for helpLast week I wrote about people with a spiritually oriented business having difficulty asking for a decent amount of money in return for services rendered. I suggested this was due to subconscious, past-life memories of being persecuted and killed for doing healing work.

Another thing that surfaced during my meeting with the German coaches, that served as a block to creating success in business, was a feeling that they have to do everything themselves, including all the things they felt incompetent in or hated to do.

These included things like keeping track of money, inventory control, order fulfillment, appointment scheduling and doing anything technical or internet related. A number of them bordered on technophobia. Almost none felt comfortable with marketing.

They felt that what they were good at and loved to do was drowned out by all the other things one has to do to create and sustain a money-making business.

Few of them had heard of outsourcing or crowdsourcing, otherwise known as hiring to your weakness.

In other words, hiring people to do all the things you hate doing, are not good at, and that eat up your time and energy. This leaves you free to do more of what are good at, which means you earn more money so you can pay people to do the other stuff.

Crowdsourcing is defined by Merriam-Webster as the process of obtaining needed services, ideas, or content by soliciting contributions from a large group of people, and especially from an online community, rather than from traditional employees or suppliers.

When you are running a small business, especially a one-person business, like coaching or counseling, managing and leveraging your time is crucial. It makes good economic sense as well as relief for you personally to outsource everything you cannot do well or don’t like to do.

For example, suppose your rate for the service you provide is $150 per hour. The less time you spend doing what you are no good at, the more time you have available to earn money at that relatively high rate, while paying others a lot less per hour to do something quickly that might have taken you many hours or days to do.

For example, it makes no sense to spend hours trying to learn from scratch some complicated program on your computer to do something that would take a techie teenager 30 minutes to achieve for almost no money. Or, at the most, $45 per hour for someone more qualified.

Not long ago, this would have meant going out and physically finding professional people to do all these things for you and having to pay quite a lot of money to have them work for you.

Not anymore. There are lots of websites now that showcase every sort of service you could ever need to support you in your business, and at very low prices.

Let’s say you need a flyer done for your next workshop, or a website home page designed. Well instead of hiring a professional designer to do it, or trying to do it yourself and making a mess of it, just go to

You can get something like this done for just $5 at this website and by a good designer too. If you don’t believe me, try it. At that price, you can try several until you get the one you like and feel able to establish a relationship with for future work.

ODesk is another one. E-Lance, too. With them, you ask people to bid on a particular project. You then pick the one that seems the best. They are all vetted by their respective websites, so you know they are legit.

Many of those bidding are overseas and for that reason their prices are often very low. They do it to build their business. You rate them afterward, so it is in their interest to do a good job for you.

We have used all three of these in our own business. However, only after spending years being one of those people who always thought I could and should do everything myself and thereby save money.

I was wrong, and that is why it took me so long to build a lucrative business. Don’t make that same mistake. Today there is absolutely no need to be that way. It doesn’t pay.
